Synopsis/Abstract

Synopsis/Abstract The SEI Capability Maturity Model, CMM, addressed Requirements Analysis in the 1990s and was updated to the SEI Capability Maturity Model Integrated, CMMI, to cover all product development processes, not just software.

The International Institute for Business Analysis, IIBA, created the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge Guide, BA BOK®, using the PMBOK® Guide as a model. IIBA offers certification for Certified Business Analysis Professional, CBAP®, similar to the PMI PMP® certification.

The PMBOK® Guide, 6th Edition, Chapter 5, Scope Management, addresses product requirements, AKA Product Scope. PMI has established the Professional Business Analyst, PBA®, certification.

Requirements must provide the designers and builders the same “picture” of the final result that the customers have created in their personal memory banks. Analyzing what is said and what is written to clarify and focus the vision of the final result is a process that frustrates most projects, whether for a process plant or a web site.

Requirements Analysis is a technique that is applied in the Process of progressively elaborating on the Product Scope. The output of the Requirements Analysis must be a Product Description that draws the same picture for all the stakeholders. The SEI CMM calls this picture a “shared vision.”

Requirements have two parts: Expectations and Specifications. We will show how Requirements writers and readers can improve their understanding of customer Expectations and SEE what should be produced by using certain rules and tools.

These techniques allow you to ask crucial questions and ensure you build the right thing.
