Military project management5

Project Managers are in demand in virtually all business sectors in our project-driven world.  More organizations are recognizing the value of having a skilled workforce to deliver successful projects and business outcomes.

PMI research identifies the project management profession as one of the fastest growing careers in the world. Between 2010 and 2020:

  • 15.7 million new project management roles will be created globally across project-intensive industries.
  • The U.S. anticipates double-digit growth (more than 12%) in demand for project management practitioners, resulting in almost 6.2 million jobs in 2020.

In today’s market, skilled workers like you, who can get up to speed quickly and immediately make an impact on business results, are in demand. Organizations know that hiring former military personnel with project management expertise is an essential strategy for maintaining a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

A career in project management offers you the opportunity to leverage your leadership and management skills, perfected while serving your country, into a rewarding new career path.

Now is the right time to explore project management as your next career.

 Taking the First Step

A career in project management is more achievable than you might think.  Here are steps to guide you while considering a career in project management:
  • Inventory your skills — Some military experience actually qualifies as project management experience in the Project Management Professional (PMP)® program or entry level Certified Association in Project Management (CAPM)® program for those with little or no project management experience. Additionally, roles such as risk managers, schedulers, business analysts, technology managers, portfolio managers and more provide a variety of options as well as career path opportunities.
  • Translate your skills — Crosswalk your military skills into project management jargon used in the industry. Through Project Management Job Board, access career services with every step of the job-seeking process, from resume writing to career coaching.
  • Meet People in the Field — Network with other military service member and veteran project managers at your local PMI chapter; work with the chapter Military Liaison or Military Mentors who can help you determine if project management is the right fit for you, and mentor you through the process.
